Coltivazione sulfurea
an exhibition curated by Gabriele Logiudice
with works by Samuele Angemi, Claudia Di Costa, Carmen Manusia, Giulia Marletta, Francesco Mosca, Selene Pulejo, Lara Schilirò

a project of Academy of Fine Arts in Catania and viaraffineria coordinated by Marcella Barone and Gianluca Lombardo.

Coltivazione sulfurea begins with a study of the space surrounding the viaraffineria, the area of Le Ciminiere, an old industrial area in the city of Catania, characterised by the dominance of the old chimneys that lift the city upwards. From the concrete to the sky and then back to the underground. These tall red brick towers silently observe the city, scrutinising its every slow movement, perceiving its painstaking transformation.
In the lime that binds the bricks together there is a dust that, like grains of sand stuck to a wet body, does not disappear. It stays there. It is yellow. It is sulphur.

The artists reasoned about the surrounding area and its links to sulphur processing.

The exhibition is the result of a project that began in January 2024 with Marcella Barone and Gianluca Lombardo and the students of the New Languages of Painting course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Catania. The graphic project was coordinated by Marco Lo Curzio and designed by Paolo Costanza and Asia Sabatelli.

I carusi workshop by Samuele Angemi

On December 22, Samuele Angemi presented the workshop I carusi, which traces the history of sulphur in Sicily through the image of the canary. This particular bird was used in the mines to signal a sudden reduction in oxygen.

During the workshop, Samuele Angemi guided the participants in creating small origami canaries that, when placed side by side, became a metaphor for the exhausting working conditions that the miners, the "carusi" and the birds themselves were subjected to.

The origami created were used to expand the work “I carusi” by Samuele Angemi present in viaraffineria on the occasion of “Coltivazione sulfurea” and in his subsequent exhibitions.
The workshop follows the same activity carried out by the artist at the “Sante Giuffride” and “Vespucci” institutes in Catania.
