Creatività indipendente is an event curated by viaraffineria presented on March 18th in the spaces of Isola Catania in Piazza Cardinale Pappalardo no. 23.
The event investigated how visual art can be used to enhance and reinterpret cultural heritage, offering an overview of the management of independent spaces and cultural associations, as well as the sustainability of work in relation to the contemporary and territorial condition.
From 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. took place the workshop Creatività indipendente (Independent Creativity) co-hosted by Giulia Caruso (viaraffineria), Gabriele Logiudice (viaraffineria) and Francesca Pionati, artist, researcher and editor.
At 6.30 p.m. a talk with Francesca Pionati, enrico floriddia and Anna Migliosa investigated the conditions of independent creative and cultural work, with particular reference to the situation in Sicily.
At the end of the talk Barbara Cammarata and Mario Bronzino presented the exhibition Abbrivio by Alessandro Costanzo.

Mentors of the workshop

Francesca Pionati is an artist, researcher and editor. Her research is invested in aesthetic and political relationships between urban infrastructures, governance and trauma. To develop her works, Pionati analyzes different forms of language and infrastructures through archival material, forensic investigations, interviews and encounters. Pionati’s practice is closely linked to radical and collaborative pedagogies.Since 2020, Pionati has collaborated with Tommaso Arnaldi as a member of the artist duo VEGA. In 2021 she co-founded the curatorial and research practice Iniziative di II, and co-initiated the yearly publication II Magazine, to explore paradoxes and methodologies within contemporary publishing. Francesca holds an MA in Art Praxis from the Dutch Art Institute. Her works and projects have been presented at MACRO Museum, Museo MA*GA, Triennale Milano, Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Rome, Manifattura Tabacchi, Sant’Andrea de Scaphis, MEGA, Cassina Projects, de Appel, Centrale Fies, Artissima, Vleeshal, Radio alHara, among others. She has partaken in residency programs by Forma Arts and Media London, Triennale Milano, MATTATOIO, Lo Schermo dell’Arte and Teatro India.

Gabriele Logiudice (Catania, 1997) is an independent researcher and curator. After graduating in Cultural Heritage from the University of Catania, in 2019 he moved to Venice where he completed a master's degree in Visual Arts held by IUAV University. In 2024 Logiudice attends CAMPO, a course of curatorial studies and practices at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin. He currently collaborates with the Curatorial Department of the MAMbo museum in Bologna. As of 2023 he is curator and researcher of viaraffineria.

Giulia Caruso is a cultural project manager. She graduated in Business Administration at the University of Catania, and continued her education with a Master of Art at the LUISS Business School in Rome and a Master's degree in Economics and Management of Arts and Cultural Activities at Ca' Foscari Venice. Among her collaborations with contemporary art realities and institutions are Galerie Emanuel Layr (Rome), CASTRO (Rome), Galleria Collica & Partners (Catania), Fondazione Brodbeck (Catania), MACRO - Museo d'Arte Contemporanea Roma where she was coordinator of exhibition and event production. She currently collaborates with APS LOCALES (Rome) in the role of project manager.
