MAST - Music Art Sustainability Territory
visual art research
August 1 - 9, 2025, Scicli
“MAST is a totally immersive experience within Scicli. Artistic and musical research are the tools to embark on this journey where sustainability and relationship with the territory are core values that make MAST a unique moment of sharing between individuals and the community.”
For the 2025 edition VORTICE, the festival formed a research team to explore new visions in architecture, philosophy, sound and visual arts. viaraffineria was selected in the visual arts section with STORIES OF THE LAND. PRACTICES OF RENEWAL AND WASTE REUSE, a project on the relationship between water, production and sustainability in south-east Sicily.
Where water once flowed, only a footprint remains. The old stream that ran through the centre of the town of Scicli has left a void, a dry channel. This absence is not just a sign of the past: it is a starting point for questioning the dwindling water resources, the drought that is transforming landscapes and the ways in which agriculture is reinventing itself in order to survive.
The research is based on the absence of one of the four natural elements, water, and how its drastic reduction has triggered a process of waste awareness in food and agricultural supply chains.
STORIES OF THE LAND. PRACTICES OF RENEWAL AND WASTE REUSE branches out into three different actions: workshop, talk, and archives.
Archive
Creation of an archive on the climate crisis, collecting essays, novels, scientific texts and poems that raise awareness of environmental issues. The project is made possible thanks to the collaboration of elèuthera editrice, NERO and wetlands.
Workshop
Regenerative design: designing vortexes of abundance by Gesualdo Busacca with viaraffineria.
August 1 - 2, Scicli
Participants will explore permaculture as a sustainable, holistic approach to life. Through design tools, creativity, games and personal storytelling, they will learn to think systemically to create “vortexes” of regeneration in relationships and inhabited places.
Talk
moderated by viaraffineria with Gesualdo Busacca and Lorenzo Cannella
August 2, 7:00 p.m., Chiosco di Scicli
The conversation led by viaraffineria with Gesualdo Busacca and Lorenzo Cannella stems from the value that words, and the discourse surrounding them, can have in raising awareness of the climate emergency, with particular reference to the situation in Sicily.
