Un’introduzione (An Introduction)

The title plays on the different shades of meaning that the word has in English and Italian. “Introduction”, which in English means “presentation”, is our act of introducing ourselves for the first time to the city of Catania, and of introducing it to the selected artists. Introduction', on the other hand, is the gesture that the spectator makes towards the reality of viaraffineria when he physically enters our spaces and is confronted with a work.
The current historical moment has imposed new conditions for the enjoyment of the environment that surrounds us and, in particular, of places intended for the public. A new threshold has been created between the person, the space and the exhibition. An Introduction wants to accompany the viewer to the edge of this threshold, which can be crossed (i.e. entered) or which can be the starting point of a new dialogue.
On the other hand, if current circumstances have set a new boundary between the spectator and the exhibition space, the health contingency measures circumvent the usual filters intervening between work and audience. The possibility of visiting the exhibition by sharing the path with several people changes radically, offering new opportunities to focus on the intimacy between the spectator and the work, in an attempt to catalyse attention instead of dispersing it during the exhibition experience: the visit will be possible in conditions of absolute solitude and for as long as necessary.
For the occasion, the artists have been invited to propose works that reflect on the conditions of alteration, dispersion and absorption of attention, as well as on the possibilities of installation offered by the peculiar space - viaraffineria.
