VIVAVUCI is an exhibition project that reflects on the processes of vocal transmission as vehicles of immaterial identity, an extension of an anthropological instinct aimed at the survival of shared practices and beliefs. The exhibition places in dialogue the works of José Angelino, Daniela Maria Geraci & Elena Lo Presti, Silvia Giambrone, Lily Lavorato, Pietro Librizzi and Timo Performativo through an itinerary developed in the spaces of the former industrial viaraffineria warehouse. The artists bring together, through a plurality of languages, the different possible views of transmission processes, investigating them as systems of energy flows, moving traditions, dislocated and transformed terrains.
Curated by Gaia Bobò and Daniela Maria Geraci, the exhibition pays special attention to the complex geography of Southern Italy, understood as a fluid space, a constellation of mythologies and imaginaries, whose oral tradition has never been properly systematised partly because of the migration stories that have characterised it over the centuries.
The title, VIVAVUCI, incorporates the term “voice” in the Sicilian language - recognised by UNESCO as a vulnerable language at risk of extinction - also referring to the more common “vivavoce”, or communication out loud. The intent is to celebrate the vocal instrument - viva (the) voice - the most ancient system of transmission of knowledge, a vibration born from the depths of the body, a fundamental element for the communication of public and private stories.
The voice is a communicator, narrator, activist, mediator and meditator. Its absence is an active silence, underlying the will to listen. It can offer itself on its own, or accompany itself with others, becoming a chorus, to protest, vociferate, persuade, entice, drown, deafen, adore, laugh, celebrate.
